Unit 4: Celebrations Reflection
Celebrations was the big idea of this unit and I really enjoyed creating the art work and learning about new artists. I think everyone has their own celebrations and what better way to express those celebrations through art work. This unit gave us the chance to bring each of us together, through art, as we illustrated how we are different, through our celebrations. As stated in Pink (2006) "It [symphony] is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields," (p. 130).
The first piece of art work is a finger puppet which was inspired by artist Nick Cave, I really enjoyed making the puppet because it gave me a chance to make whatever I wanted that would fit on my finger. Nick Cave is a great artist that I would like incorporate into my future classroom because his work represents unity between the community. His art work encourages people to express themselves in the way that they want to. The finger puppets were made out of a substance called cloud clay which started off very easy to work with so you could make your puppet, then after a while the mold hardened to stay in that shape. I would really like to use this in my classroom one day.
The second piece of artwork was done digitally and represents a magazine cover. The inspiring artist was Norman Rockwell. I really enjoyed creating this piece because it incorporated technology so it gave me a different perspective on how to make art. I want to incorporate this method of art making in my future classroom because it would not only help the students with their artistic abilities but it would also further their technological knowledge. I think it is important, especially in these times, to implement as much technology as possible as early as possible because students will have to use so much new technology in their future and they need a good foundation/background in using that technology.
The third and final piece was my choice of art, which was inspired by artist Miriam Schapiro. The art work is about heroes because of my lesson plan I created. The lesson plan's big idea is "Heroes." I wanted to create this art piece that posed the question of "who is your hero?" to really help the students think critically about who their heroes are. I want to use this idea of "artists choice" in my future classroom because I want to give my students the chance to take what they have learned within my classroom and create a piece of art work that represents them. According to Bang (2000), "Go over each of the principles you have used and see if you can intensify them" (p. 95).
All of these pieces of art are linked through the main idea "Celebrations." The art work that I have created within this unit all represent a celebration of some sort. I really liked this unit and want to incorporate it in my future classroom because celebrations are important to everyone and being able to create art work that represents your celebrations seems to encourage individuality and creativeness.
